GEO vs AEO

GEO vs AEO: Are They the Same Thing?

Quick answer: AEO (answer engine optimization) gets your content picked as the direct answer to a question. GEO (generative engine optimization) gets your business named inside an answer an AI tool writes.

So what is AEO and GEO in practice? Two labels for overlapping work, and both rest on ordinary SEO. Google’s own guidance treats them that way.

If a vendor pitched you “GEO” and you wondered whether it was a new service or a new invoice, this guide is for you. You will get the plain difference and a clear order of work.

Here is the worry behind the acronyms. A prospect asks ChatGPT for the best accountant for a small construction company. The AI names three firms. Yours is not one. That prospect never visits your site, and you never see the lost deal.

What is AEO and GEO? Plain definitions

Both terms describe work that helps your content show up in AI-driven search. The difference is the kind of answer you are chasing.

  • AEO (answer engine optimization): Structuring a page so a search engine or voice assistant can lift a short, direct answer from it. Think featured snippets and voice replies.
  • GEO (generative engine optimization): Making your brand likely to be mentioned in answers that AI tools write, such as ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews.
  • SEO (search engine optimization): The base layer. Getting your pages found and ranked in regular search results.

GEO started as an academic term. Researchers introduced it in a paper presented at the KDD 2024 conference. Their best methods lifted visibility in AI-generated answers by 41% on one measure and 28% on another, compared with unoptimized content.

Are AEO and GEO the same?

Not exactly, but nearly. The target differs. The work barely does.

The industry has not settled on terms. Digiday reports that GEO, AEO, and GSO get used interchangeably. Profound, an AI visibility vendor, argues they are one strategy under two names.

Google goes further. Its guide to generative AI features treats this work as an extension of SEO. If your SEO is weak, neither label will rescue it.

Why did GEO and AEO become necessary?

People click less when an AI answer appears. Pew Research Center tracked 68,879 Google searches from 900 U.S. adults in March 2025. With an AI summary, users clicked a regular result in 8% of visits. Without one, they clicked in 15%.

Clicks on links inside the summary happened in about 1% of visits.

More people also skip the search page and ask a chatbot directly. Pew’s June 2026 survey of 5,119 U.S. adults found that 49% use AI chatbots and 44% use ChatGPT.

Buyers of local and service businesses are in that group. BrightLocal’s 2026 survey of 1,002 U.S. consumers found that 45% use AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% the year before. BrightLocal sells local SEO software, so read it as a vendor survey.

The takeaway is simple. A ranking buys less traffic when an AI summary sits above it. A mention inside the answer now counts on its own.

What does Google say you need to do?

Less than the vendors suggest. Google’s AI features documentation is short on requirements:

  • Be eligible for Search. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet.
  • Nothing extra. Google states there are no additional technical requirements for its AI features.
  • Expect a wider net. AI Overviews and AI Mode may run several related searches, so the links they show can be broader than a classic results page.

Google also advises checking third-party AEO and GEO advice against its own guidance. Be wary of a pitch that:

  • Guarantees AI mentions or a date. Nobody controls what an AI tool writes.
  • Sells GEO as a separate package without first reviewing your SEO.
  • Rests on a trick, such as a special file or markup, that Google says it does not need.
  • Reports an “AI visibility score” with no method you can repeat yourself.

How do I optimize my brand for AEO or GEO?

Start with the work that helps both. Then lean toward the one that matches how your buyers ask:

  • Buyers ask short, specific questions (cost, how long, do you serve my area): write answer-first pages. That is the AEO move.
  • Buyers ask “who is the best X for Y”: your name has to appear consistently and credibly across the web. That is the GEO move.

Here is the order we would use:

  1. Fix the SEO base. Pages must be indexed and fast, and they must match what buyers actually search. If your organic traffic is not producing leads, start with <u>why your SEO isn’t working</u> (Hyperlink to /blog/why-is-my-seo-not-working once confirmed live).
  2. Answer first. Give the plain answer in the first two sentences under each heading, then explain. Snippet systems and AI tools can both lift a clean answer.
  3. Keep your business facts identical everywhere. Use the same name, services, and service area on your site and on every listing. BrightLocal notes that AI answers can draw on reviews, directories, business websites, and social profiles.
  4. Publish proof an AI can quote. Original numbers and named client results give a tool something specific to cite.
  5. Check the result monthly. The next section shows how.

We build this into our SEO services. GEO is not a separate line item for us. It is SEO that has to hold up in a new place.

How do I check whether AI names my business?

Few guides cover this. It takes about an hour to set up. Run a simple test:

  1. Write ten questions your buyers ask, in their words, such as “best web designer for a law firm.”
  2. Ask each one in two or three AI tools.
  3. Log in a spreadsheet whether you were named or linked, and who was named instead.
  4. Ask each question twice, because answers can change between runs.
  5. Repeat every month and watch the trend.

Google has also added a generative AI report to Search Console. Its help page says it shows how often your links appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country, device, and date. Google says it rolled out worldwide as of August 31, 2026.

The report covers impressions only. It has no clicks or queries, and sites with few AI impressions may not see it yet. Treat both methods as direction, not exact measurement.

Where Gramup stands on GEO

We treat GEO as part of SEO, and our results come from the SEO work. When we worked with Leverage with Media PR, the site scored 12 out of 100 on SEO and sat on page 9 of Google.

After the rebuild, the site reached page 1 visibility for its target keywords. Organic traffic grew 100% and qualified leads tripled. The work was a buyer-focused rebuild, on-page SEO, and content strategy. You can read the Leverage with Media PR case study.

Frequently asked questions

Will GEO replace SEO?

No. Google says its AI features run on the same core ranking and quality systems as Search. Treat AI visibility as an extra surface that sits on the same foundations. A business that drops SEO to chase GEO weakens both.

Does schema markup help me show up in AI answers?

Google says you do not need special schema markup to appear in its generative AI features. Structured data still helps with rich results in regular search, so add it for that reason. Do not expect it to earn an AI mention on its own.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

Google’s guide says Google Search does not use llms.txt files, so adding one will not change your Google visibility. Other AI tools may behave differently, and we have not found solid proof either way. Treat it as optional.

What do LLMO, GSO, and AIO mean?

They are other names for the same work as GEO. LLMO means large language model optimization, and GSO means generative search optimization. AIO usually refers to Google’s AI Overviews, so check which meaning a vendor intends. None is an official standard.

Is AI visibility worth it if most of my leads come from referrals?

Possibly. A referred buyer often looks you up before calling, and more of them now ask a chatbot first. Run the ten-question test once. If you are named accurately, spend nothing. If you are missing or wrong, fix the basics.

How long until AEO or GEO show results?

Nobody can promise a date. In our experience, the SEO base takes 3 to 6 months to show meaningful results, and AI mentions depend on that base. See <u>how long SEO takes to work</u> (Hyperlink to “How Long Does SEO Take to Work?” post once published). Anyone guaranteeing AI citations in 30 days is guessing.
